The aim is to teach students basic knowledge of steel structures (bridges) in the areas of: - Material, fabrication, connections, standards - Applied stability, stable and unstable elastic equilibrium, general criteria for elastic stability, elastic instability modes, buckling of real structural elements - Elements, methods of analysis of steel structures, cross-section classification, local buckling, tension members, columns, buckling lengths, frames - Plate behaviour and design, unstiffened plates, stiffened plates, plate girder behaviour and design, box girders - Thin-walled construction, thin-walled members, thin-walled columns and beams, sheeting - Fatigue, fatigue strength, assessment of fatigue life, fracture mechanics - Design and behaviour of tubular structures
On the course completion the students are able to design simple steel structures (girders, cantilevers) including connections to basis of Eurocodes. They are able to work as building inspectors, design engineers or in other areas related to steel structures.
