Course content
1. Purpose of vehicle diagnosis, basic terms, basic diagnosis methods, legislation. 2. On board diagnosis (OBDII, EOBD) - history, principles, technical solution, serial communicationk and data transmission. 3. Tools for series and parallel diagnosis - properties od diagnosis testers, automotiv oscilloscopes, external sensors, information sowftware for car repair services. 4. Diagnosis of chosen systems of SI engines with indirect fuel injection - starters, generators, fuel system. 5. Diagnosis of chosen systems of SI engines with indirect fuel injection - ignition system, oxygen sensos (switched type, UEGO), diagnosis of catalytic convertor. 6. Diagnosis of chosen systems of diesel engines - turbocharging, exhaust gas recirculation, rotary injection pumps. 7. Diagnosis of chosen systems of diesel engines - Pumpe-Duse injection system. 8. Diagnosis of chosen systems of diesel engines - Common-Rail systems. 9. Diagnosis of SI engines with direct fuel injection. 10. Exhaust gas emissions of SI and diesel engines - emission systems, regulations, exhaust gas analyzators. 11. Vehicle/Engine Torque and power measurement - roller and engine dynamometers. 12. Diagnosis of elements of passive and active safety systems (brake systems, stability systems - ABS, ASR, ESP). 13. Diagnosis of CAN bus and comfort systems (air conditioning, etc.).

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)
Learning outcomes
Introduction to terms and technical capability regulations, diagnosis of mechanical components without disassembly. Properties of modern tools for car diagnostis. Diagnosis of powertrain and comfort systems. Spark ignition and diesel engine diagnosis, emission tests, methods and equipment for measuring power and torque of engine, fuel consumption measurement. Diagnosis of elements of passive and active safety systems (brake systems, stability systems - ABS, ASR, ESP). Diagnosis of CAN bus and comfort systems (air conditioning, etc.).
Student has good knowledge of diagnosis of road vehicles after completing this course.
Prerequisites
It is assumed that student already has good knowledge of vehicle electrical and mechanical systems.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Student has to prove his/her knowledge during semester (active participation at exercises) and in final exam. Teacher provides particular demands at the beginning of course.
