Course content
Corrosion ? nature and types. Classification and types of corrosion processes. Chemical and electro-chemical corrosion. Types of corrosion attacks, corrosive environment. Corrosion reactions and cells. Testing methods of metal corrosion ? natural and laboratory corrosion tests. Corrosion and corrosive resistance of non-ferrous metal materials (Al, Ti, Cu, Zn?). Corrosion of glass and plastics. Pre-treatment of metal surfaces. Surface treatment ? used methods and characteristics. Procedure to recommend anticorrosion protection. Corrosion-proof materials ? corrosion-resistant steel.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
The objective of this subject is to present to students the basic mechanisms of corrosion of metal and some selected non-metal materials. Students will also acquire knowledge of the influence and effects of various types of corrosive environments on individual types of technical materials, of the surface layer phenomenon and of the basic principles and methods of anticorrosive protection of materials.
After passing the subject, students are well informed on the classification of the basic corrosion mechanisms, they are able to evaluate the material choice suitability and their possible anticorrosive protection, as well as to assess the characteristics of usual corrosive environments and the risks resulting from operation in these conditions. Students also know the basis principles of anticorrosive protection including the choice of suitable structural modifications and surface protection to increase corrosive resistance.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of structural materials and engineering technologies is supposed from the previous academic study, based primarily on the subjects of ?Material Science?, ?Structural Materials?, ?Mechanical Technology? and ?Special Technology?, as well as the basics of secondary-school chemistry.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Discussion

Students must prove that they understand the basic principles of corrosion and anticorrosive protection within the scope of presented topics. Student will be informed on the particular scope and requirements at their first tutorial over the project assignment, generally in connection with the issues of their thesis.
