Recommended optional programme components None
Course availability The course is available to visiting students
Lecturer(s)
  • Schmidová Eva, prof. Ing. Ph.D.
Course content
The course is divided into two parts. The first part is focused on the internal structure of basic types of construction materials and on the strengthening and relaxation mechanisms. The course explains the relation between structural and mechanical characteristics of materials. The second part focuses on the nature of degradation processes and limiting states of materials. Understanding these processes in relation to different nature of service utilization allows a qualified material selection or a solution of specific operational problems.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)
  • Practical training - 30 hours per semester
  • Preparation for an exam - 20 hours per semester
  • Independent critical reading - 30 hours per semester
  • Preparation of a presentation (report) in a foreign language - 20 hours per semester
  • Participation in classes - 30 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce the physical principles of strength and plasticity of materials. It presents the basic patterns of processes deterioration of materials, with a focus on the limit states of fatigue and brittle fracture.
Students will gain an overview of the mechanisms of material failure as influenced by the application, along with an introduction to the fundamental methods used to analyze degradation processes.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the internal structure of materials, basic mechanical parameters and phase transformations.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Knowledge of the internal structure of metals and alloys, principles of phase changes in steels and cast irons, basic mechanical tests.
