Course content
Production and storage of transfusion products. Blood donation - legislation, donor selection, collection of blood and blood components, administration of donor registers. Processing and examination of collected blood and its components. Transfusion preparations. Laboratory examination of transfusion products and plasma for fractionation, hemovigilance. Quality control of transfusion products and plasma for fractionation, related Czech and EU documents. Blood derivatives. Principles of effective haemotherapy, indication of transfusion products, blood derivatives. Post-transfusion reactions, causes, examination. Therapeutic haemapheresis. Autotransfusion, separators. Immunohematological examination during pregnancy and after delivery. Transplantation of haemopoietic cells, tissues.

Learning outcomes
Completion of the course will provide theoretical and practical knowledge of the complex character of transfusion medicine, a theoretical overview of issues that are closely related to transfusion medicine, such as tissue transplantation, care for pregnant women, haemotherapy, hematopheresis treatment, industrial blood plasma processing, modern therapy, administration of donor registers. After completing the course the student will be able to understand the legislation for blood transfusion services, respect the conditions of good manufacturing practice in blood transfusion services, know the principles of haemovigilance and haemotherapy, assess the correct indication and interpretation of immunohematological examination results, recognize cases whose laboratory examination understand the analytical methods used.
