The aim of the course is to extend students' basic knowledge of adsorption phenomena, mechanisms of adsorption and their theoretical description. Advanced methods of evaluation of texture properties of porous materials (i.e. determination of specific surface area, volume, shape and pore size distribution) are discussed, both with the tools of classical thermodynamics and with tools of theoretical chemistry and particle physics. The course will present current knowledge of surface chemistry, the interaction of adsorbed molecules with adsorption centers, the energy of these interactions and the interpretation of adsorption heats, as well as current knowledge of the effect of adsorption system dynamics and energy of adsorption (flexibility of solids and diffusion of molecules inside pores), capillary condensation, cavitation and percolation mechanisms. A separate chapter is devoted to the study of co-adsorption and separation processes based on adsorption. The course includes also the introduction of adsorption and textural properties of new advanced adsorbents and currently intensive studied problems in the field of surface chemistry and adsorption phenomena.
