Course content
Corrosion definition, corrosion origination, crystalline structure of metals, solids surface characteristics, electrochemical corrosion theory, major factors affecting electrochemical corrosion. Atmospheric corrosion - principle, corrosion climates. Soil metal corrosion - corrosiveness of various soils according to their composition. Other corrosive environments - stray earth currents corrosion; in fluid metals, in dielectric environments. Corrosion in natural waters - factors affecting corrosion rate. Metal corrosive attack types and special corrosion cases (uniform corrosion, point corrosion, filiform corrosion, pitting corrosion). Corrosion of non-metallic materials, corrosion resistance of plastics. Corrosion protection by constructional material choice, metallic materials, organic materials - plastics, rubber, inorganic non-metallic materials - silicates. Corrosion protection by environment adaptation, inhibitors and electrode potential alteration. Corrosion protection by coatings, protective coatings function, metallic coatings and sheetings. Corrosion protection steps conception and lay-out analysis, requirements and operating life determination. Material and corroding characteristic conditions in chemical production, phenol and polymers production. Material and corroding characteristic conditions in chemical production - primary mineral oil processing, purifying method, PDC production, etc. Materials corrosion resistance testing, corrosion tests general guides, tests in natural conditions and in operating industrial conditions.

Learning outcomes
The subject acquaints with basics of corrosion process in atmosphere, water, soils and metallic and non-metallic materials corrosion protection methods. The process mechanisms and electrochemical, chemical and physical corrosion processes are explained here. Principles and possibilities of corrosion protections, including procedures of complex corrosion protection project are explained. Further students are acquainted with selected materials corrosion behaviour. The aim of the subject is to acquaint the students with corrosion process mechanisms, corrosive attacks types and corrosion protection possibilities. The second aim is teaching concerning characteristics of corrosion of commercially used materials.
Graduate is well versed in a branch of complex corrosion protection design after the graduation. He/she has also knowledge about possibilities to utilize constructional materials in various corrosive environments.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of inorganic and physical chemistry.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Written examination

There is an oral examination. Primary form of exam is the debate about selected themes. Level of acquired knowledge, conceptions and application acquirements is examined. Knowledge is examined by test during semester and its result is included into total classification.
