Course content
Week 1: Polymer structure, polymer chain models, molar mass and methods of its determination. Week 2: Viscometry of dilute polymer solutions, static and dynamic light scattering. Week 3: Chromatographic techniques with emphasis on gel permeation chromatography. Week 4: Combination of gel permeation chromatography with a light scattering detector and an online viscometer. Week 5: Asymmetric flow field flow fractionation. Week 6: Characterization of polymer branching. Week 7: Spectral methods with emphasis on infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Week 8: Magnetic resonance methods with emphasis on nuclear magnetic resonance. Week 9: Thermal methods. Week 10: Methods of mechanical evaluation. Week 11: Objective measurement of color I: Color and color of substances, visual triplet, transformation of remission curves into trichromatic values CIE XYZ, chromaticity diagrams x,y,Y, color models CIE Lab, CIE L Ch. Week 12: Objective measurement of color II: Color deviations, remission spectrophotometers, turbidity, whiteness and yellowness index, K-M equations. Week 13: Practical demonstration of instrumentation in the laboratories of the Institute of Chemistry and Technology of Macromolecular Substances and SYNPO a.s. Pardubice.

Learning outcomes
The course introduces the basics of various analytical techniques used to characterize synthetic and natural polymers. The course also includes a practical demonstration of instrumental techniques in the laboratories of the Institute of Chemistry and Technology of Macromolecular Materials and the company SYNPO a.s. Pardubice.
The student will learn about the analysis and evaluation of various polymer materials.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of organic, analytic, and macromolecular chemistry.
