Course content
Polymerization reactions - step and chain processes.. Thermodynamics of polymerization reactions. Ceiling temperature, polymerization-depolymerizaton equilibrium. Condensation and addition polymerization, functionality of monomers, polymer architecture, gel point. Mechanisms and kinetics. Calculation of gel point (critical conversion) - Carothers, Flory. Radical addition polymerization mechanism and kinetics. Copolymerization - reactivity ratios, Methods of radical polymerization. Solution, suspension, emulsion polymerization. Anionic, cationic and coordination polymerization.Living anionic polymerization. Crosslinking of polymers - alkyds, unsaturated polyesters, polyurethanes, vulcanization. Living radical polynerization - special polymerization processes - GTP, ATRP, SFRP, RAFT.

Learning outcomes
The course explains mechanisms and kinetics of polymerization reactions, used in polymers manufacturing. Exercises are focused on simple calculations.
Enlarged knoledge in macromolecular chemistry important for master degree study of Technology of Polymers Manufacturing and Processing.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of organic, physical and macromolecular chemistry.
