Course content
1. Introduction to GIS: the definition of GIS, GIS components, non-spatial and spatial data, map layers. 2. Spatial operations, the importance of combining spatial and non-spatial data. 3. Data in GIS: vector and raster map layers, TIN layer. Object-oriented data model. 4. Data in GIS: points, lines and areas and their descriptions, topology. 5. Coordinate systems and map projections. 6. Map servers and other network geoinformation services. 7. Digital terrain model, 3D views of GIS. 8. Modeling of processes in the environment in GIS. 9. Principles of remote sensing. 10. Principles of remote sensing II. 11. Adjusting the view and visual interpretation of remote sensing data. 12. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of remote sensing data. 13. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of remote sensing data II. 14. Examples of the use of GIS and remote sensing data in the field of environment protection.

Learning outcomes
To Master basic processes of various stages of the analytical GIS project from data acquisition and customization to the presentation of the results. To get an overview of the current developments in the field of GIS.
The student after completion of the course should be able to work independently with geographical information systems and have an overview of the possibilities of their use in the field of environmental protection.
Prerequisites
Basics of work with the PC.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Student performance assessment

Completion of a practical test at the computer, and an explanation of steps taken.
