Course content
Kinetic equations and rate constants. Theory of reaction rates: collision theory, theory of activated complex (transition state). Interpretation of activation parameters. Rate limiting step. Change of the rate limiting step in dependence on reaction conditions. Physical and chemical methods in determining reaction rates. Methods used in determining kinetic equations and rate constants. Background information, identification of intermediates and reaction products. Influence of reaction conditions on reaction rate. Determination of kinetic equation and rate constants. Integration and differential methods. First and pseudo-first order rate constants. Enzyme kinetics, RPKA methods, Visual Kinetic Analysis (VTNA). Study of kinetics of reactions of various types: second order reactions, reversible reactions, parallel reactions, solution of systems with intermediates by Bodenstein approximation, preliminary equilibria.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students of the doctoral study program with various types of kinetic equations, their derivation, design and solution. Attention is also paid to various techniques of kinetic measurements.
The student will be able to design and solve second order kinetic equations and kinetic equations of parallel, reversible and subsequent reactions as well as reactions taking place through one or more reactive intermediates. For multi-step reactions, he will be able to determine the rate limiting step and identify possible alternative reaction pathways.
Prerequisites
The course builds on the basic knowledge acquired in the course Basics of Physical Chemistry, taught in the 2nd year of bachelor's study and the subjects Physical Chemistry for Advanced and Physical Organic Chemistry taught in the 1st year of the follow-up master's study.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

During the exam, the student will suggest possibilities how to solve the given problem in the field of kinetic analysis.
