Course content
Basic methodological approaches to the regional development theories. The origin and development of regional development theories, considering the development od regional policy. The main approaches to economics and their impact on regional development theories. Classification of regional development theories. Neoclassical approaches and models. Core-periphery approaches. Structuralistic approaches. Critical realistic approaches. Neo-liberal rapproaches. Institutional approaches and the current period of regional policy.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to present the most important theoretical approaches in regional development. This would help to understand the current regional policy of Czechia as well as the regional policy of supranational integration groupings.
A student, who has successfully completed the course, knows: - list and evaluate the main theoretical approaches of regional development, including the most important theories; - explain the bases and implications of the most important theories of regional development and provide a comparison of these theories; - characterize the different stages of regional policy; - characterize the basic methodological approaches of regional development theories, compare them with each other and describe the limits; - explain the theoretical basis of current approaches applied in the framework of regional policy of the Czech Republic and the EU. A student, who has successfully completed the course, is skilled enough to: - use selected theories and concepts in independent and creative way to find a complex solutions to the practical problems of regional development and regional policy. A student, who has successfully completed the course, is able to: - make independent and responsible decisions in the field of regional policy, in terms of the wider societal implications; - communicate the nature of regional development expertise and their own views on possible solutions to both professionals and lay people.
Prerequisites
The basic knowledge of regional science, regional policy, and regional economics.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Home assignment evaluation, Student performance assessment, Discussion

The assignment conditions: completion of tasks submitted. The examination: completion of the written test (i.e. to get at least 60% of the points available) is needed to attend the oral form of examination.
