Course content
|
Basics of interpersonal communication. Crisis management in the public sector and its relation to communication. The basics of risk communication. Theoretical models of risk communication. Stress situations - differences in crisis and ordinary communication. The impact of stress in risk communication. Risk communication planning with reference to the plans developed for the needs of public sector institutions. Procedures in risk communication. Communication with the affected and addressing their needs by public and civil sector actors. Inclusive risk communication with specific groups of people.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with theoretical foundations, specifics and contexts of risk communication, as well as practical principles, techniques and rules that can be used to help solve crisis situations at in different environment. The emphasis will be placed on communication led by public sector actors.
A student, who has successfully completed the course, knows: - explain the nature of risk communication with regard to the risk and crisis management; - characterize basic theoretical models of risk communication and compare them with each other; - list a wide range of principles, common mistakes and ethical misdeeds of risk communication in selected situations; - explain specific procedures of risk communication with emphasis on the formulation of the message, the messanger, and the media; - explain the differences between normal stress situations and crisis situations with regard to the applicability of risk communication techniques. A student, who has successfully completed the course, is skilled enough to: - search, organize and interpret information relevant to the risk communication; - solve practical problems in crisis communication using particular expertise and procedures; - choose the appropriate form of risk communication management with respect to the specifics of the ongoing crisis situation. A student, who has successfully completed the course, is able to: - co-ordinate risk communication in model situations; - communicate to both professionals and lay people about the nature of professional problems and their own views on how to solve them; - professionally conduct risk communication with regard to its ethical dimension.

Prerequisites
|
The knowledge of the basic principles of security and protection of population, and psychology is an advantage.

|

The assignment conditions: active participation in class, completion of submitted tasks. Examination: oral form.
