Course content
Ireland, Celts and their languages (C. Carson: Insular Celts and other poems). Irish myth and their relation to poetry. (M. Heaney, P.W.Joyce etc.) The relation of modern poetry to the past (triads, curses and other genres - M. Hartnett et al.). The relation of modern poetry to the past (contd.) (P. Muldoon: Imram). 17th-century poetry (Lilli Burlero, The Boyne Water et al.). 18th-century poetry (J. Swift, O. Goldsmith et al.). The poetry of T. Moore and Irish Romantic patriotism (selected poems). 19th-century poetry (J. C. Mangan, P. Colum et al.). W. B. Yeats (selected poems) and the Celtic Twilight. 20th-century poetry to 1950 (S. Clarke et al.). 20th-century poetry (C. Carson, D. Egan et al.). The poetry of S. Heaney and other contemporary poets (J. Quinn et al.).

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on the contribution of Anglo-Irish writers to the development of poetry in English from the Middle Ages to the present. The influence of traditional genres and forms of Celtic literature (triads, curses, songs, etc.) is also discussed in connection with Irish history.
Students will develop their textual, analytical and literary competence.

Home assignment evaluation

Attendance (75 %), a short paper (about 3 pp.) on an Anglo-Irish poem, collection of poems, or a poet, discussion about the paper.
