Course content
Introduction to the field and basic terminology. Monolingual, bilingual and pronunciation dictionaries. Vocal anatomy. The International Phonetic Alphabet. Aspects of classification of consonants and vowels and their basic properties. Pronunciation of grammatical endings. Sound and spelling correspondences. The syllable. Stress, connection to morphological structure of words and word class. Weak forms. English rhythm. English tones, the structure of tone unit and functions of intonation. Aspects of connected speech.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic phonetic and phonological principles necessary for the analysis of spoken language. The course places emphasis on a contrastive comparison of the Czech and English phonological systems and on the development of students' pronunciation skills. KPUAJ competence 1.1.3.
Students will gain the ability to describe the mechanisms of speech production and perception, the system of English consonants and vowels and compare it with the system in Czech. Students will develop a competence to apply the knowledge of English word and sentence stress, intonation and all the processes of connected speech into practice. Students will also learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet.
