Course content
Literature, literariness, genres (prose, poetry drama). Elements of Prose Fiction I: setting, character, theme, plot (exposition, complication, climax, dénouement), narrative strategy (analepsis, prolepsis, foreshadowing, etc.). Elements of Prose Fiction II: narrator and point of view. Periodization I: Classicism, Romanticism. Periodization II: Realism, Critical realism, Naturalism. Periodization III: Modernism, Postmodernism. Drama I: generic specificities, terminology, comedy. Drama II: tragedy and other dramatic subgenres. Poetry I: figurative language, rhetorical devices. Poetry II: rhyme and sound parallelism. Poetry III: rhythm, basics of prosody. Poetry IV: stanza forms, poetic genres. Forms of literary Criticism.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to master the terminology and the theoretical and critical concepts needed for further study of literature. During the course, students will not only study theoretical works, but will also, in seminars, work with primary British and American literary texts of different genres. The learning outcomes will be the development of basic literary terminology, reading strategies and ability to apply critical and theoretical concepts on primary texts.
students will acquire socio-cultural, textual and analytical competence in literary areas. with the acquired theoretical vocabulary they will be able to interpret a literary text.

Written examination

face-to-face in-class learning: - attendance (3 missed classes max.) - active participation in seminars and pre-seminar preparation (study of materials) - final written test in case of remote teaching: - lectures and seminars are online in real time via MS Teams - active participation required in the same extent as in the full-time study mode - self-study of classroom materials prior to the seminar (available in Moodle) - final online test (Moodle)
