Course content
Introduction to the field and basic terminology. Monolingual, bilingual and pronunciation dictionaries. Vocal anatomy. The International Phonetic Alphabet. Aspects of classification of consonants and vowels and their basic properties. Pronunciation of grammatical endings. Sound and spelling correspondences. The syllable. Stress, connection to morphological structure of words and word class. Weak forms. English rhythm. English tones, the structure of tone unit and functions of intonation. Aspects of connected speech.

Learning outcomes
The main objective of the course is to acquire theoretical knowledge of English phonetics and phonology and improve students' pronunciation. Also, the course aims at the comparison of the English and Czech phonological systems and raising students' competence to present the phenomena concerned to learners at primary schools.
Students will gain the ability to describe the mechanisms of speech production and perception, the system of English consonants and vowels and compare it with the system in Czech. Students will develop a competence to apply the knowledge of English word and sentence stress, intonation and all the processes of connected speech into practice. Students will also learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet.
