Course content
Introduction to syntax: terminology, simple sentence structure in English and in Czech. Sentence elements: formal, syntactic and semantic characteristics. Subject: grammatical, notional and general subject; Czech subjectless verbal sentences and their English equivalents. Predicate: syntactic types of verbs, sentence patterns. Adverbials - adjuncts: form, position, semantic roles. Adverbials - subjuncts, conjuncts, disjuncts: form, position, sematic roles. Non-finite verb forms as sentence elements: syntactic roles, Czech equivalents. Negation in English and in Czech: scope and focus of negation. Concord/agreement: grammatical, notional, proximity rules; apposition Complex noun phrase: head, premodification and postmodification; Czech equivalents. Communicative types of sentences: statements, commands, exclamations, questions. Minor sentence types, block language.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with essential theoretical knowledge concerning English and Czech simple sentence structure, the form and function of clause elements, and communicative types of sentences. The course focuses on analyzing authentic structures/texts from the contrastive perspective.
Students will be able to use English grammatical structures correctly and appropriately in particular contexts. They will be able to identify clause elements, to describe sentence patterns, and to apply the theoretical knowledge when analysing authentic texts as well as when producing their own texts. They will acquire a competence for comparative study of the English and Czech sentence structure.
