Course content |
Gradient on morphological and syntactic level. Typological characteristics of English and Czech. Synthesis and analysis in English morphology and syntax (word order, inflection, articles, prepositions). Passive voice. Nominal tendencies in English, non-finite forms and verbo-nominal constructions. The simple, complex and compound sentence in English and Czech. Topics open to negotiation (cohesion, information packaging, word order, FSP)

Learning outcomes |
The aim of the course is to draw attention to more general linguistic concepts, such as the notion of gradient, and apply them to concrete categories in the language system. Also, focus will be placed on the typological characteristics of English in comparison with Czech. The problems discussed will be approached from functional and textual perspective.
Students will acquire the knowledge of selected issues of general linguistics and typology and will be able to apply it to the system of English language. Students will be able to interpret language means functionally and with respect to the textual level of analysis. |
