Course content
Introduction to stylistics: style, register, genre Stylistic means at graphetic/graphological, phonetic/phonological, and morphosyntactic level Stylistic means at lexical, semantic and textual level Stylistic analysis: stylistic parameters of context, situational characteristics of registers Conversation Public speaking Electronic discourse Newspaper discourse, headlinese Press advertising Scientific and popular scientific style, academic discourse Administrative style, legal documents

Learning outcomes
The course introduces basic concepts of the theory of style and various aspects of stylistic analysis. The aim is to provide a complex description of different text types, functional styles and stylistically relevant linguistic features. Stylistic analysis focuses on scientific style, the language of the media, public speaking and the language of conversation. An additional objective is to integrate relevant concepts of other linguistic courses into Stylistics.
Students will be able to identify and describe distinctive linguistic features in English spoken and written discourse and to carry out a complex stylistic analysis of various styles and registers. They will also improve competence in their own production.

active participation in seminars written assignment (instructions in LMS Moodle) stylistic analysis of a selected text + presentation of the analysis in a seminar oral exam (stylistic analysis of a non-literary text)
