Course content
1. Historical development of translation aesthetics. 2. The emergence of the literary work and the three phases of translation process. 3. Aesthetic problems of translation (partial, full, zero equivalence). 4. Translation method and its development: comparison of older and new translations of the same work. 5. Translation criticism

Learning outcomes
The course deals with the specific requirements for the translation of art. Theoretically, it presents a historical cross-section of translation aesthetics (from Horace and Cicero to the hermeneutic approach of Heidegger and Gadamer) and the creation process of a literary work, concretization, interpretation, and translation. On the practical side, it focuses on the complicated relationship between reproductive and artistic norms. The course provides a critical assessment of translated texts, highlighting key factors to consider when translating artistic texts and identifying potential pitfalls that translators may face. Since the seminar requires independent creative activity, a high level of proficiency in both English and Czech is necessary. After completing the course, students will: - understand the concepts of translation strategies and methods - understand the development of translation studies as a scientific discipline - be able to identify difficulties in translating texts with aesthetic value - be able to evaluate translated text

1. Active participation in seminars and completing the assigned tasks (partial translation of selected works). 2. Annotation of two studies analysing translatological problems (2 pages). 3. Portfolio discussion.
