Course content
Introduction to the field, basic morphological units and terms. Morphological characteristic of English and Czech. Inadequate rules and oversimplification. Word classes. Concept of phrases, their function and form. Lexical morphology and word-formation processes. Nouns, case and gender. Nouns, number and countability. Collective nouns and concord in English and in Czech Determination, classification and position of determiners. Types of reference, the use of articles, compariosn with Czech. Pronouns, their properties, function and classification. Types, properties and gradation of adjectives and their correspondence to other word classes. Semantic and functional classification of adverbs and their formation. Prepositions and conjunctions, their types, form and function.

Learning outcomes
The main objective of the course is to acquire a competence to employ a wide range of English grammatical structures appropriately as required in the context. All relevant grammatical categories will be studied in detail. Also, the course aims at the comparison of Czech and English grammatical systems and raising students' competence to present grammar to learners at primary schools.
Students will gain knowledge in the field of English word classes, their classification, properties and formation. All relevant grammatical categories will be studied in detail. Students will be able to assess mutual influence of individual grammatical phenomena, their role within a phrase and the change of their function in dependence on context.

- compulsory seminar attendance (you can miss two seminars at most) - activity in the seminars - written test at the end of the term (65%)
