Course content
Understanding the concept of Special Educational Needs. Learners with Specific learning difficulties. Specific learning difficulties and foreign language learning. Exceptionally gifted learners. Individual learner differences. Differentiation. Specific teaching techniques in teaching English to learners with SEN. Differentiated planning. Material teaching aids.

Learning activities and teaching methods
  • Preparation of a presentation (report) in a foreign language - 2 hours per semester
  • Contact teaching - 24 hours per semester
  • Home preparation for classes - 24 hours per semester
  • Independent critical reading - 12 hours per semester
  • Individual project - 16 hours per semester
  • Preparation for a credit (assessment) - 12 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to develop student teachers´ professional competence in the area of special educational needs. Attention will be paid mainly to learners with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) and to exceptionally gifted learners. Student teachers will learn to identify selected special educational needs and reflect them in lesson preparation.

Assessment methods and criteria

1. active participation in face2face seminars (1 missed class) 2. implementation of a small-scale project aimed at learners with specific learning difficulties (integrated with Teaching Practice I and Reflective Seminar I): - designing and piloting research instruments (observation sheets, interview, etc.) - presentation of the project and its results, reflection - preparation of a differentiated plan for an English class with integrated learners with specific learning difficulties (details in Moodle) 3. Teaching English to gifted learners: Ongoing task completion (see assignment in Moodle) and final colloquium. ERASMUS students: 1. preparation of differentiated plans for three consecutive English classes with integrated learners with specific learning difficulties 2. an essay about the English language education of learners with SEN (learners with specific learning difficulties and gifted learners) in the students´ home country (2 to 4 pages)
