Course content
Linguistic sign. Approaches to the study of meaning. Sense relations. Compositionality and combination of meaning. Extensions of meaning. Reference and deixis. Speech acts. Grice's Cooperative Principle. Politeness theories and principles. Conversation analysis. Vagueness and indirectness.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
The course serves as an introduction into the study of meaning as it is understood by general semantics, lexical semantics and pragmatics. Students will become familiar with basic concepts and theories formulated in the three fields, with various approaches towards the study of meaning and the way it is conveyed.
Based on the gained knowledge, students will be able to analyze authentic written texts as well as spoken utterances from pragmatics and semantics points of view and to apply the knowledge in their own production.
