Course content
Introduction to stylistics; style vs. register. Stylistic means at phonetic/phonological and graphetic/graphological level. Stylistic means at morphological and syntactic level. Stylistic means at lexical and semantic level. Textual style markers; text typology. Stylistic analysis; criteria; stylistic parameters of the context. The language of conversation. The language of public speaking. Scientific style; popular scientific style; the language of academic writing. The language of newspaper reporting. Block language; headlines. The language of press advertising. The language of administrative texts; business correspondence; legal documents; written instructions.

Learning outcomes
The course introduces basic concepts of the theory of style and various aspects of stylistic analysis. The aim is to provide a complex description of different text types, functional styles and stylistically relevant linguistic features. Stylistic analysis focuses on scientific style, the language of the media, public speaking and the language of conversation.
Students will be able to analyze various authentic texts, they will improve their competence in describing stylistic features as well as in producing their own texts.

active participation in seminars (only 2 seminars can be missed) two written assignments (the tasks and deadlines will be specified in seminars) oral examination (stylistic analysis of a non-literary text)
