Course content
Basic theoretical framework of the theory of second language acquisition, terminology. First and second language acquisition. Error and error analysis: synchronic and diachronic perspective. Interlanguage. Learning theories and second language acquisition. Interlanguage studies: social, cognitive and linguistic aspects. Individual differences in second language acquisition: age, aptitude, motivation. Language learning strategies.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the multidisciplinary field of second language acquisition, its structure and methodology. The aim is also to enable students, who have already acquired knowledge of the language and about the language, to obtain deeper insights into the processes of second language acquisition and learning. Students´ understanding of the complexity of the processes will facilitate their (self-)reflection. The main emphasis will be placed on an individual study of the relevant literature including the analysis of research outcomes. Note: The USLA course is offered once in two years, i.e. in the academic year 2016/2017.
Students will develop their ability to proces information and to think critically. They will be also able to anmalyse a problem and view it from both diachronic and synchronic perspective. Furthermore, they will develop their presentation and (self-)reflective skills.

Assessment methods and criteria
Discussion, Self project defence, Presentation

1. active participation in seminars (two unattended classes tolerated) 2. presentation of a chosen topic 3. submitting a seminar paper (analysis of a selected study) and a follow-up discussion Specific requirements concerning the presentation and the seminar paper will be provided in the first seminar and then they will be available in IS STAG. Note: The USLA course is offered once in two years, i.e. in the academic year 2016/2017.
