Course content
|
Goals of historical grammar. History and language, English in Indo-European context. Phonetics: Changes from Middle English to Modern English. Changes from Old English to Middle English. Interrelation between spelling and pronunciation. Older changes, European context. Comparative approach Morphology: Nouns and adjectives. Development of declension. Pronouns and articles. Verbs. System of tenses. Overview of the development of morphology. Major syntactic changes, analysis of the text. Vocabulary, periods of other languages influence. Recent development and changes, varieties of English.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the development of the English language and the principles of development of language in general. The language development is explained in relation to the development of literature, culture, and society.
Diachronic and synchronic views of the language will help students understand the language as a developing system, understand relation of pronunciation and spelling, and irregularities in modern English language resulting from its history (especially in phonetics and phonology, spelling, morphology and syntax).

Active participation (maximum 2 classes can be missed) written test (60 minutes): characteristic features of English language development - phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology + oral examination based on the text analysis
