Course content
The Foundation of the Wiener Moderne; Fin de siécle: the Young Vienna (Hofmannsthal, Schnitzler), The Literature between Two World Wars (Musil, Roth), Expressionism in Austria: Trakl, Werfel. Postwar Swiss Literature: Frisch and Dürrenmatt; The Austrian Theatre and Cabaret Tradition of Scandal and Provocation from Qualtinger to Bernhard; Lyrics in the 2nd Half of the 20th Century: Bachmann; Formal and Linguistic Experiments (Jandl, H.C. Artmann). Feminist Writers: Elfriede Jelinek. .Crime Stories: Wolf Haas; Immigrant Writers: Radek.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
Presentation will show students the basic phases in the development of literature written in German in Austria and Switzerland from the beginnings to the present day. Attention will be paid mainly to the literature of the 20th century. Seminars will deal with individual periods mentioned in the lectures. Seminars are run based on text analysis of selected authors.
Students will be able to interpret texts with the regard to literary-scientific, historical, sociological, cultural and psychological aspect.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

Active participation in seminars. Presentation (topics will be suggested at the beginning of the term), to be submitted in written form as a seminar paper. Knowledge of the lectured topics. List of literature (10 titles)
