Course content
The treatise Didactica Magna - its origin and historical and literary context. Comenius's interest in didactic methods, main treatise relating to this issue, DM in the context of other didactic works. The Czech and Latin versions, the relation between them. The content of DM and its structure (its theoretical and practical parts). Elementary explanation of Comenius' Latin terminology (docere, educere, erudire, formare, instillare, instituere, ex-colere ...). Education as ars docendi. The explanation of the concepts ars/techné. "Ars" in Comenius's conception. Comenius' universalism. "Omnes omnia omnino" and its impact on the present. The development of Comenius' universalism. (The Czech Didactic, DM and the period of pansophia). Human as Imago Dei. The theological foundations of Comenius' universalism. Chiliasm and its influence on Comenius' work School as "officina humanitatis". Intellectual, moral and religional education. Comenius's educational system and its deduction "a priori" The relation natura - ars, the conception of human nature. Patočka's interpretation of these principals. The principle "ars imitatur naturam" and its origin. The influence of this principle on Comenius' didactic fundaments. The fundaments contained in DM.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this subject is to introduce students into modern concepts of university education, especially with regard to German idealism. Lectures and seminars will deal presicely with interpretation of book: Modern university: ideal and reality.
Elementary knowledge of the treatise DM and the philosophical principles of Comenius' didactic system.

The reading of some essential extracts should help students get elementary knowledge of the treatise. The students should be also acquainted with the philosophical principles of Comenius' educational system. Regular and active participation in tuition is required (attendance must be 80% or higher).
