The main trends of the French philosophy from the 19th century to the present times. From eclectict and spiritual philosophy through the phenomenology, marxism, structuralism and existentialism to the postmodern thinking.

Learning outcomes
|
The modern and contemporary French philosophy. The purpose of this course is the clarification of the basic trends of the French philosophy in the 19th and 20th century. We will stress the the main problems attended by this philosophy and its cultural specificity, its place in the project of the democratic, lay and civic society as intended by the French III Republic. The main questions are: the subject and its place in the world, the individual liberty, the relationship between the historical process and the structural one. We will examine the main trends of the French philosophy as the sensualism, intellectualism, existentialism, phenomelogy. We recommend to students to consult the Czech translations of the works by Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Vladimir Jankelevitch, Simone de Beauvoir, Razmond Aron, Michel Foucault, Paul Ricoeur, Emmanuel Levinas, Albert Camus.
The students will get the insight to the main trends and problems of the 19th and 20th centuries French philosophy.
