Course content
1) The approach of religious studies to ancient judaim as different from Jewish self-understanding, Christian, and Muslim understanding 2) Sources and methods. 3) The tension between the Jewish Bible on the one hand and extra-bibilcal and iconographical on the other hand. 4) The question of ethnogenesis. 5) Israelite pantheons. 6) Types of reckoning of time and calendars. 7) Cult (sacrifices; purity). 8) Prophecy, its character, types of prophets. 9) King (types of sacred kingship, metamorphoses of the institution). 10 Intertestamentary literature and religion. 11) Canon (the objective, the question of canonization, variants) 12) Mishna and Talmud (rabbinic thought).

Learning outcomes
The course intends to introduce students to ancient Israelite religion fromthe point of view of religious studies. It is based on the historical axis of the religion primarily. It offers an introduction to anceitn Hebrew literature and extra-biblical literary as well as non-literary sources relevant for the religion. It considers tension and harmony between Biblical and other sources. Also, it concentrates on plurality of interpretations, paralells (e.g., cult, prophecy, sacred kingship) an d theoretical tools used for interpretation of religious phenomena.
Student should gain basic knowledgo of Jewish history, culture, and religion, which is necessary for the following sessions.
