Course content
Introduction to phenomenology and existentialism Lecture: 1. Introductory lecture: Science in the service of the industrial revolution; positivism, empiriocriticism, sceptical relativism, pragmatism, psychologism and scientism. 2. Husserl's Logical Investigations I and II. 3. Husserl's basic starting points and concepts in Ideas Pertaining to a Pure Phenomenology and to a Phenomenological Philosophy I and II. 4. Husserl's conception of the Natürliche Welt in Ideas and the of Lebenswelt in the Crisis of European Sciences. 5. Hermeneutical tradition and Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenology in Being and Time; definition of key terms. 6. Heidegger's phenomenology after the so-called Kehre and a few remarks on Hannah Arendt's philosophy. 7. Hans-Georg Gadamer´s and Paul Ricoeur's phenomenology and hermeneutics and motives of the Life-world in Eugene Fink. 8. Phenomenological grasp of bodily existence by Ludwig Landgrebe, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Jan Patočka. 9. Introduction to existentialism. 9. Existentialist phenomenology in the work of Emanuel Levinas and so-called atheistic existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. 10. The so-called Christian existentialism in philosophy of Karl Jaspers and Gabriel Marcel. 11. A few remarks on structuralism. 12. Some remarks on postmodernism and poststructuralism. Seminar: interpretation of selected passages from individual works of phenomenologists and existentialists.
