Course content
1. Theoretical introduction to the Arabic language (the problem of diglossia, MSA, and dialects) 2. Arabic script 1 3. Arabic script 2 4. Arabic script 3 5. Determination and indetermination, gender, active and passive participles, attributive adjectives, nominal sentences, personal pronouns 6. Case system: nominative, genitive, accusative, dual-case nouns, plural, dual, demonstrative pronouns 7. Active and passive participles, negation ("miš / muš"), genitive constructions 8. Pronoun suffixes and prepositions with pronoun suffixes, verbs "to be" and "to have," particles "fí/mafíš" 9. Plural, dual, numerals, perfect tense (regular verbs) 10. Demonstrative pronouns, imperfect tense (regular verbs), imperative, verbs "to want, to be possible, to have to" 11. Weak verbs (2nd consonant w or j), particle "bitá´" 12. Weak verbs (3rd consonant w or j), verb "to give (idda)" 13. Verbs with identical 2nd and 3rd consonants 14. Purpose and reason clauses

Learning outcomes
The course will focus on modern Arabic. As this is a semester-long course, the main objective is to enable students to read vocalized text and learn basic formal phrases (introductions, first contact at the airport, contact with authorities). In the second half of the semester, basic phraseology of the modern Egyptian dialect will be taught in a more systematic manner.
