Course content
1. Prolegomena to the topic of "contemporary Islam" (data, dynamics, preliminary determination of lines of thought and currents) 2. Geography of modern and contemporary Islam (traditional, key, specific areas) in historical dynamics after 1800 3. The crisis of classical Muslim civilization, its causes and consequences in the 19th century (the declining Ottoman dynasty, colonialism, World War I, mandate policy, World War II, the establishment of the State of Israel...) 4. Efforts at revival through purification (Wahhabism, Salafism, jihadism), further development of Salafism (e.g., the Muslim Brotherhood), Islamic fundamentalism, Islamism, extremism (discussion of inconsistently used terminology), radicalization currents (S. Qutb - Khomeini - A. A. Mawdudi - Y. Qaradawi) 5. Modern reforms (al-Afghani, M. Abduh, M. Rashid Rida), the role of al-Azhar, changes in fiqh and legislation in the 19th-20th centuries, attempts at reforming philosophy and society (M. Iqbal - A. Izetbegović - M. Jabiri - H. Hanafi - A. Soroush) 6. The idea of nationhood, nationalism, ethnicity in the Muslim world (Pan-Arabism, Pan-Syrianism, Pan-Islamism...) 7. Islamic thought in Asia (India, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia...) 8. The Arab Spring and the role of religion (secularization, depoliticization, and politicization of Islam...), the role of institutions (caliphate, LAS, OIC...) 9. Approaches to the Quran (M. Arkoun - N. A. Zajd - M. M. Taha) 10. Reforms of law and legal science (M. Talbí - M. Shahrur - A. A. an-Na'im - A. at-Tajjib) 11. Islamic and Arab feminism (A. Wadúd - F. Mernissi - H. R. Izza) 12. European Islam, Islam in the Czech Republic

Learning outcomes
The course introduces students to current issues in modern Islam based on an understanding of the roots of today's situation in the main geographical areas since the 19th century. The course will take two forms: frontal lecture teaching by the instructor and familiarization with key works by modern thinkers (in Czech/English translation) in the form of group reading and discussion. The course will be taught in Czech.
