Course content
1. The Congress of Vienna and the New European Order 2. Metternich's absolutism and the Habsburg monarchy in the first half of the 19th century 3. The first phase of the Czech national movement; Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier 4. The Revolution of 1848, the second phase of the Czech national movement 5. The Habsburg monarchy in the second half of the 19th century, the unification of Germany 6. Industrial revolution and the rise of capitalism, the struggle for colonies 7. Great power rivalry before the First World War, Balkan crisis 8. The World War I and its consequences 9. Establishment and development of Czechoslovakia until 1938 10. Demise of Czechoslovakia, Central Europe on the way to World War II 11. World War II, its course and consequences; division of post-war Europe, the Cold War 12. Restoration of Czechoslovakia, political and cultural development in the years 1945-1968 13. Invasion of Warsaw Pact troops, normalization period, "Velvet Revolution" 1989

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide a basic overview of the historical development in Central Europe in the 19th-20th centuries. The main attention will be paid to the political and cultural development of the Czech lands / Czechoslovakia, which will be supplemented by an outline of the development in the surrounding countries, or by placing selected events in the historical context of the whole of Europe.
Students will get a basic overview of the historical development in Central Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Prerequisites
The course is primarily intended for students of Historical and Literary Studies [Historicko-literární studia], or for students of non-historical fields who have not completed grammar school (three-year/four-year) history courses.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Student performance assessment

Compulsory attendance at lectures (max. 3 unexcused absences), self-study of selected chapters. The exam will take the form of a graded written test. In the case of the distance learning, teaching will take place through assigned written assignments, the written test will be carried out online.
