Course content
Thematic areas: 1. Ancient rhetoric (pre-Aristotelian, Hellenistic, Roman). 2. Rhetoric and medieval culture. 3. The disintegration of the rhetorical system in the science and culture of the modern period. 4. Rhetoric in the 19th and 20th centuries. 5. Typology of rhetorical theories (rhetoric agonal, rhetoric as the promotion of philosophy and science, rhetoric as a theory of argumentation, rhetoric as a tool of education, rhetoric as a theory of text and stylistics).

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive view of rhetoric as a key discipline in the system of sciences about humans and their actions, the historical roots of rhetoric and the transformation of its functions from the Antiquity to the present day in the context of the values and currents of opinion of the related historical periods. Theoretical lessons will be accompanied by analyses of texts of rhetorical speeches by specific authors/rhetors and analyses of features of rhetorical style in works of academic or fictional literature.

The course exam will consist of an analysis of two rhetorical speeches, one historical and one contemporary, and their comparison with each other on the basis of the knowledge gained in the course.
