Course content
Introduction in the Bulgarian studies. Program of the seminar, literature. Introduction to the historical geography of Bulgaria (from the Middle Ages to the present). Geography and administrative zoning of present Bulgaria. Demographic processes in Bulgaria; ethnic map af Bulgaria. Deepening economic and political crisis of the communist regime in the end of 1980´s. The year 1989. Bulgarian transition to the democracy and its international context. Bulgaria in the 1st half of 1990´s - to the october elections in 1991. Bulgaria in the 1st half of 1990´s II. - the 1st independent administration SDS; the administrationa of Ljuben Beron (1992-1994). Bulgaria in the 2nd half of the 1990´s - the administration of Žan Videnov (1995-1996), the administration of Ivan Kostova (1997-2001). Development of Bulgaria after the elections 2001. Balance sheet of the Bulgarian transition to the democracy; main economic and social problems of the contemporary Bulgarian society.

Learning outcomes
The goal of the course is to present Bulgaria through its historical, social, cultural, geopolitical, geographical and political development. The basic aim is to describe everyday life in Bulgaria and to outline basic regional context. The concrete topics will be historical and contemporary traditions, national stereotypes, current problems etc., and their fixation in sub consciousness of Bulgarian society.
Students will be able to analyse concrete relations between historical traditions and present, to analyse national stereotypes, nowadays problems etc.

Active participation in the course, writing a seminar paper (size: 5 pages), passing a final test.
