Course content
Introduction - basic catogories of the Old Bulgarian period. Common charakteristics of the St. Cyril and Methodius Tradition. Cult of Ivan Rilski in Bulgaria. Literary interpretations. Ohrid Literary School - Preslav Literary School: mutual ralations. Chernorizets Hrabar and the other historiographic works. The Bogomilism. Bogomilims Literatury Tradition. Struggle against Bogomilism. Old Bulgarian Hagiography - The Lifes of Bulgarian Saints. Apocrypha Literary Genres. Patriarch Evtimiy of Tărnovo and his scholars. Tărnovo Literary School. The Middle Ages narratives genres in the Bulgarian Literature. Literary Evolution on the territory of present Bulgaria and Macedonia in the period of Ottoman expansion. Literary turns between old and new Bulgarian literature (16th - 18th century) Summary and synthesis.

Learning outcomes

The students will gain the knowledge about the beginnings of literary tradition in the given language-literary area, further they will be able to define the basic genres of Bulgarian Middle-Age and to think of the literary development of the so-called Golden Age of Bulgarian literature.
