Course content
The monuments and national festivites The anti-clerical movement National oddities The myth of the pub The Habsburgs in Czech context and other myths The turn of the century - the decadence myth, hermetism, cosmopolitism versus patriotism, the conspiracy of the Omladina movement, The Jubilee Exhibition, 1918 - the myth of anti-Austrian resistance, russofilia versus the turn towards the West

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to discuss selected themes from the culture of National Revival in the context of its historical and mythological dimension. The course will be theoretically based on semantic analyses made by V. Macura and on methods of cultural and historical anthropology as well as on new interpretations of Czech century history in 19th century - a formative period of development of modern Czech society.
The students will get acquainted with the problematics of development, personalities and events of Czech 19th century cultural history and with the mythical background of some interpretations of the national past.
