Course content
The role of myth in history The origins of National Revival, romanticism - the myth of the language and the nation, antagonism between Czechs and Germans, the myth of Slavonic intercommunity, the Romantic archeology "The Manuscripts" (and other "monuments") - the myth of the past, 1848 - the revolution myth, the Hussite movement, the trecherous gentry, St. Wenceslas, the rustic people and other myths "The monument plague" and national festivities, anticlerical movement, national oddities, the myth of the pub, the Habsburgs in the Czech context and other myths The turn of the century - the decadence myth, hermetism, cosmopolitism versus patriotism, The conspiracy of the Omladina movement,1918 - the myth of anti Austrian resistance, rusophilia versus the turn towards the West

Learning outcomes
In this lecture the phenomenon of Czech National Revival and its basic auto- and hetero-stereotypes will be discussed in the context of the European National Revival movements. Special attention will be given to Revival myths surviving until the present. This course will enable the students to acquire better understanding of the irrational structures in national and social identity formation and to realize the position of self in contemporary world. They will get acquainted with the historical background of Czech culture and with the basic phenomena that had, in 19 th century, formed our national mentality.
