Course content
Definition of the notion of fundamentalism - common features of fundamentalism movements or groups, various views of fundamentalism - Muslim fundamentalism and terms frequently used in the same meaning (islamism, salafism, jihadism etc.). Islam reformism and Islam modernism from historical point of view - a try to give reasons for their confusing with Muslim fundamentalism. Development of Islam societies - existence of Islam societies, existence of Islam civilisation/civilisations - the isuue of political culture - colonialism and its impact on Islam societies - how 'West' and 'Islam' perceive each other. Mass media theory - mass media impact - mass media influence (normative requirements od mass media contents, manipulation in mass media, principles of mass media content interpretation). 'Muslim fundamentalism' in Czech, possibly in foreign mass media - analysis of selected mass media contents - team work.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to deal with the phenomenon of Muslim fundamentalism and its presentation in mass media from a critical point of view. Students will be able to define the notion of fundamentalism as well as another terms being used in mass media contents (news, articles etc.) as possible synonyms to 'Muslim fundamentalism' (islamism, salafism etc.). Students are also supposed to discuss the relevance of these terms in given context. The issue of mass media impact and influence on individuals and society in whole and principles of mass media content interpretation will be considered, too. Last but not least students will be encouraged to analyse selected mass media contents regarding the discussed topics.
Successful students should be able to define the notion of Muslim fundamentalism and another terms that are frequently used in mass media contents with regard to the given phenomenon. Considering principles of mass media content interpretation they are also expected to be able to analyse selected texts from critical point of view, particularly dealing with the relevance of the discussed terms in given context.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Islam as a religious system.

Assessment methods and criteria
Home assignment evaluation

Active participation in tutorials - absence in two or possibly in three (justified) tutorials are excused. Team presentation of a analysis of 'Muslim fundamentalism' (or a different issue considering the phenomenon) in selected mass media (selected mass media contents) - details will be discussed in the first tutorial. To attend the course successfully each student is also required to hand in a one-page search for mass media news reagarding Muslim fundamentalism or a different relating issue with reasons.
