Course content
Philosophical schools (Darshans) I.: introduction, grammarians, Samkhya and Yoga. Philosophical schools II.: Vedanta, Mimamsa. Philosophical schools III.: Nyaya (and Vaisheshika). Can we talk about Indian Ethics? Rituals (in temples, at home, transitional; pilgrimage customs). Calendar and feast days. Islam in India. Christian Europe and India - from antiquity till the end of the 18th century. Indian traditions in the colonial era and religon. Indian traditions in the last decades and their presence in the Western world.

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to follow the development of several philosophical and religious systems, namely the streams of Vaishnavism, Shaivaism, Shaktas and also Tantra, as well as their reaction to presence of Islam and then on the new colonial rurlers, especially British. Some significant Indian reformers of the 19th century will be introduced and specific merging of religion and politics in the movements for independence as well. The influence of the Indian diaspora in recent history will also be mentioned and several influential personalities who expanded various forms of Indian traditions in the Western world will be introduced.
Students will get deeper knowledge about the traditions of South Asia, about their philosophical, ritual, social and political dimensions.

Assessment methods and criteria
Didactic test, Discussion

The condition for passing an exam is: 1.) sufficient knowledge of the lectured topics (including the lectures from winter term - INDN1); 2.) sufficient knowledge of the obligatory literature; 3.) sufficient knowledge of at least two titles from the list of recommended literature (it is also possible to read other titles, if this has been approved by the instructor). The exam is oral.
