Course content
The origins of Christianity in Judaism and ancient religions. The formation of the Christian Biblical canon. The practical orientation in the Bible. Translations and methods of interpreting Biblical texts. The creed and dogmas of the Ecumenical Councils as an interpretation of belief. Christological disputes and Oriental Orthodox Churches; their union with Rome. Common elements of Christian worship; types of liturgy. Overview of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Roman-Catholic church and specific tenets of its dogmatics and organization. The monastic life as Roman-Catholic peculiar institution; its parallels elsewhere. Traditional reformed churches, including churches coming from the Czech reformation. Evangelical and Pentecostal churches; atypical streams with elements of Christianity.

Learning outcomes
The course objective is to introduce, from the point of view of Religious Studies, the most traditional and visible religion in our country.
Students will be informed about the Bible, dogmatics, liturgy, history, particular confessions, and denominations. Students will be encouraged to study materials about Christianity in an unprejudiced way.

Credit is dependent upon the student writing reviews (each no less than two pages - 3,600 characters) for at least four books. The requirement for the credit is also a success in test in the range of 20 questions with three possible answers ranging knowledge of lectures and basic study literature- The student can choose books for review from the list of recommended literature or can choose other titles if those are approved by the lecturer.
