Course content
A few introductory words about Sanskrit: It is a still a living and productive language, a consideration of the horizons that are opened by an understanding of Sanskrit, its place among Indo-European languages, its development, the structure and characteristics of classical Sanskrit. Sound system, pronunciation, and writing system. Practicing the system of writing. Verbs of the first class - present active. Personal pronouns in nominative. Declination of a-roots of nouns of masculine and neuter gender. Sandhi - the first part. Verbs of the 4th, 6th, and 10th class - present active. Negation and some connectives. Revision. Cases of nouns - meaning, usage. Cases of nouns - finishing. Imperfect and imperative of active verbs. Optative of active verbs. Declination of personal pronouns. Revision. Declination of feminine nouns (a-roots). Declination of feminine nouns (i-, u-roots). Other pronouns.

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the basics of the grammatical structure of the language, and to enable them to learn the system of writing in devanagari, grammar, and vocabulary of particular lessons. Students will be encouraged to study regularly and to be disciplined in preparation, since this difficult language demands it.

Attendance during lesson is required (two absences are permitted; otherwise, homework compensation will be given). Credit is dependent on doing the homework for each lesson (forgetting one's homework is acceptable only twice, and the reasons have to be relevant) and on passing a written test at the end of the course.
