Course content
Overview of basic definitions of art and commenting on these. Relationship of art, magic and ritual. Shamanism and art. Beginnings of art and its function in society (stadial view), so-called folk art and art of the "elite". General features of art of the primitive peoples. Anthropological symbolism in art of non-European regions. Anthropological aspects of art of the pre-Columbian civilisation of Central and South America. Art and ritual in Australia and the Pacific. Art and ritual in Africa and selected regions of Asia. Basic principles of comparative anthropological studies on art.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to define the term "art" and characteristics of its role in the development of society from the viewpoint of anthropology. The course will cover the relationship between art, magic, ritual, ethnological and anthropological aspects, so-called art of the primitive peoples and folk art. Basic characteristics of art in non-European areas (America, Africa, Australia, Oceania, etc) will be given.
At the end of the course, students will be able to apply the comparative methods on different types of art in the horizontal sense (geopolitical and historical and cultural level) as well as in the vertical sense (time line of historical and cultural development).

Attendance at the lectures. Study of the recommended literature. Type of assessment: exam - will be based on final essay or test and on regular written exams testing the knowledge. There will be one or two during the semester.
