Course content
Seminar of general academic skills with L. Viková: 1-2. Organization of seminars, division into working groups and becoming familiar with the way of work, library and digital resources 3-4. Language as a mediator of the object of utterance 5-6. The structure of a professional text 7-8. Grammar training, citation usage in social anthropology 9-10. Typology of bibliographies 11. Plagiarism: definitions, consequences and ways to prevent it 12. Effective reading of a professional text 13. Summary and recapitulation of reading Seminar on working with English texts with H. Synková: The progress of the topics depends on the speed with which the group will progress. A text will be prepared for each lesson. 1. Language proficiency test, explanation of requirements, evaluation of dictionaries and translators. 2. Creating a definition, comparing texts, explaining similarities and differences. Vocabulary: ethnology, ethnography, ritual 3. Answers to questions to the text, listening. Vocabulary: culture, cultural relativism and ethnocentrism, kinship 4. Analysis of definitions of culture, test for right / wrong. Vocabulary: culture versus nature 5-7. Vocabulary development (geographical names, socialization, research methods, social stratification) 8. Reading strategies, text analysis: Nice Girls Don't Talk to Rastas (Gmelch 2012); topics: stereotypes, heterogeneity 9. Summary of the text, analysis of the text: Eating Christmas in Kalahari (Lee 1969); topics: livelihoods, cultural misunderstandings 10. Text analysis: Symbols of Category Membership (Eckert 1989); topics: marginalization, us and them, norms and values 11. Text analysis: Taraka's Ghost (Freed, Freed 1999); topics: gender, hierarchy, marriage, illness, religion 12. Writing methods in anthropology, text analysis: Father Christmas Executed (Lévi-Strauss 1993 [1952]) 13. Summary of the seminar

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to improve perceptual and analytical skills in reading Czech and English professional texts and to improve expressive skills in written expression in the Czech language. The course creates strengthens the ability to reflect written language resources. They will acquire the ability to logically structure a text, consolidate the stylistics of professional expression and learn to cite and prevent plagiarism. Students will increase their level of understanding of anthropological texts written in English, expand their vocabulary and alleviate the fear of reading foreign language texts. The course is divided into two thematic seminars - the first improves the ability to read Czech text and strengthens academic skills (formerly Academic Reading and Writing), the second is the ability to understand professional English texts (formerly Reading English Texts).

Prerequisites
The ability to understand academic texts and interpret them. Knowledge of the basics of English at secondary school level.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Home assignment evaluation, Student performance assessment, Didactic test

For the academic reading and writing seminar, the following are required: a) continuous completion of assigned tasks and b) regular attendance at seminars (a maximum of 2 absences are permitted). In addition, students are required to take a final test and achieve at least 50 % of the maximum score. For the seminar on reading English texts also regular participation is required (maximum 2 absences) active participation in the class. Passing all tests (continuous and final). Subsequently, a grade is obtained from the test of academic reading and writing and English texts reading by doing an average of the two marks. However, it is necessary to get at least grade E from both subjects. It is not possible to pass one of the courses and then request a mark average.
