The objective of the course is to present the unique reflexive perspective of ethnicity and nationalism problematics. Special attention will be given to the study of ethnicity and nationalism from the viewpoint of European research tradition (anthropological, ethnological and historic-graphic) and of the concepts connected with the Czech Republic (Kohn, Deutsch, Lemberg, Francis, Gellner, Holý, Hroch, etc.). The following question will be also discussed: In what context is it appropriate to speak of the idealisation of ethnicity and its direct instrumentalisation? The course will also focus on formation of particular ethnics and nations as well as on conflicts, which are thought to be ethnical or their root can be found in nationalism.
