Course content
Life and culture of European rural inhabitants in the 19th century. Introduction to the history of European culture. Rituals connected with the birth and death. Notions on the soul and afterlife. Magical perception of sexuality. Sexual behaviour of the European rural inhabitants.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to focus on the life and culture of the European rural inhabitants in the 19th century with regard to the cultural history of Europe and also to focus on similar kinds of societies. Special attention will be given to the rituals connected with birth and death and mainly to the notions on soul and the afterlife. The next topic will be the magical perception of sexuality and sexual behaviour of the European rural inhabitants.
Students will have an opportunity to analyse a few current cultural and social phenomena of the Czech and European countryside.

Active participation, attendance at the excursion to the Czech countryside and presentation of a piece of text of one's own choice.
