Language - the key to knowing people. Language and culture I. Language and culture II. Language in society/Society in language. Language in action. Language choice. Writing and literacy. Language and gender. Silent languages. Pidgin and creole language. Speech etiquette. Language change. Final consolidation of the course.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of the course is to provide the students with an overview of several crucial topics of linguistic anthropology and their aspects and to demonstrate their mutual interconnection. The course will present the key texts of linguistic anthropology and sources of this field of study. Methodology of linguistic research with focus on the filed work and data collection will also be mentioned. The course is a starting point for the students' own research.
Students will acquire basic theoretical framework for language analysis and practical skills connected with language.

Prerequisites
|
The course presupposes the knowledge aquired in the course ULIAN and the ability to read academic texts in English.

Regular active participation. Oral presentation and making a work sheet. Short written report.
