Course content
What are the Roma studies? Their place among the social sciences. Discipline terminology. Romanies and Roma studies as political element. Beginning of Roma studies, role of Indo-European studies in its constitution, first researchers. Hypothesis on the origin of Romanies. Theory on the Indian origin of Romanies and linguistic arguments. Physical and cultural anthropology findings. Romanies in historical documents. Basic data on Romanies in the CR and SR. Ethno-social, linguistic and demographic characteristics. Basic data on Romanies in the world. Values and mentality of Romanies. Ethnic stereotypes. Field research in Roma settlements, appropriateness of individual methods and techniques. Research ethics.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to introduce the students to the problems of Roma studies in the Czech Republic and in the world. Students will be introduced to the methods and terminology in this field of study, to the basic Czech and foreign Roma literature and to the activities of research institutions and museums.
A student will gain a basic view and an orientation in this field; he will be able to define basic terms and will acquire key competences for possible field research in Roma communities.
